Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Silver baby rattles featuring coral handles became popular during the seventeenth century and remained prevalent through the Victorian era. Coral was historically believed to protect infants from evil spirits and soothe inflamed gums during teething, while silver demonstrated household wealth.

These items were predominantly crafted from sterling or continental silver, featuring repousse and chased decoration. Teething handles were made from natural materials such as polished coral, bone, or mother-of-pearl, and were frequently fitted with small silver bells.

Authentic pieces usually display official silver hallmarks indicating the maker, purity, assay office, and date letter. They often exhibit hand-chased ornamentation, small attached bells, an integrated whistle, and genuine coral showing natural structural variations.

Small antique silver items are commonly displayed under glass cloches, inside glazed shadow boxes, or positioned on decorative trays on bookshelves and sideboards to protect them from dust while showcasing their detail.

Silver sections should be gently wiped with a soft silver polishing cloth, avoiding harsh liquid dip cleaners that can damage natural materials. Coral is porous and sensitive to chemicals, so it should only be wiped with a damp, soft cotton cloth.
