Archival Detail
Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

X-frame chairs, influenced by ancient Roman curule seats and Renaissance Savonarola forms, became prominent in Middle Eastern furniture making, particularly in Damascus during the late nineteenth century. Crafted by artisan workshops, these seats catered to both local elite residences and foreign travellers seeking traditional craftsmanship.

These pieces are predominantly constructed from dense hardwoods such as walnut or fruitwood. The surface ornament features hand-cut mother-of-pearl (nacre) shell inlays, bone, or contrasting wood micro-marquetry, often set alongside deeply carved Arabic calligraphy and geometric patterns.

Authentic period examples feature hand-cut joinery, slight irregularities in the shell inlays, and signs of age-related timber shrinkage around mortise joints. The carving depth displays hand-tool marks rather than modern machine precision, and the timber exhibits a natural aged patina.

Position the piece as an architectural accent chair alongside contemporary minimalist upholstery to highlight its detailed silhouette. Pair with modern lighting or neutral linen textiles to create balance between intricate historic woodwork and clean modern lines.

Keep the item away from direct heat sources and fluctuating humidity to prevent timber movement and shell detachment. Clean gently using a soft, dry microfibre cloth, avoiding harsh chemical cleaners or excess moisture that could compromise the organic adhesives securing the inlay.
