19th Century French Giltwood Wingback Armchair

19th century
For Sale by Hand of Glory
Description

A 19th century French giltwood wing-back armchair, with foliate and ribbon carved frame and feather filled loose seat cushion, raised on channel moulded tapering supports, upholstered in a lovely duck egg blue silk damask fabric.

The chair is in good structural order with some wear to the gilding (it is gold leaf and not painted). The fabric is worn, particularly at the front edge of the seat, however it has been repaired/patched in the past and this could possibly be done again as some areas (i.e. the back panel) are sound and it's an extremely expensive French silk fabric of some considerable age. Alternatively I can completely re-cover and supply new fabric - please contact me for further details.

115cm high, 67cm wide max, the seat 53cm deep and 47cm high.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A 19th-century French wingback armchair typically features a carved timber frame finished with gold leaf gilding, a high backrest, angled side wings designed to shield from draughts, and detailed hand-carved motifs reflecting Neoclassical or Rococo traditions.

These chairs were crafted using dense hardwoods such as beech or walnut for the carved frame, coated with layers of gesso and gold leaf gilding, and upholstered using natural horsehair padding covered in woven silk or brocade fabrics.

Authentic period pieces show hand-carved joinery with mortise and tenon construction, subtle wear on high points exposing red or grey bole beneath the gold leaf, and natural oxidisation or timber shrinkage consistent with age.

A giltwood wingback chair serves as a focal accent piece when placed alongside contemporary minimalist side tables, neutral walls, or streamlined modern sofas to create a balanced contrast of historical and modern elements.

Dust giltwood frames using a soft, dry camel-hair brush while avoiding water or chemical polishes, keep silk upholstery out of direct sunlight to prevent fiber degradation, and use low-suction attachments for light cleaning.
