Antique Bow Fronted Stick Barometer by Watkins & Hill of 5 Charring Cross, London

Description

An excellent quality bow fronted mahogany stick barometer.

The silvered brass scale calibrated from 27" to 31" with sliding vernier and engraved with weather indications and makers name engraved to the top of the scale. The thermometer with silvered brass scale calibrated from 20º to 110º Fahrenheit and from 0º to 30º Reaumur. The exceptional mahogany case with excellent flame veneers to the bowed front and bowed glass to the scale with cushion moulding above. The base with an ebonised boxwood urn cistern and ebony mouldings. The case also with ebony line inlay throughout the case.

Note: This partnership was formed when Jeremiah Watkins took Hill as a partner in 1819. They made a large number of wheel and stick barometers. Jeremiah was instrument maker to the Duke of York, The Duke of Clarence and the East India Company. Height: 39"
