A framed set of three 18thc engravings of painted scenes by Angelica Kauffman c1750. Each engraving bears the name A Kauffman Pinxt (the artist) and JM Delatre Sculp (the printmaker). The scenes are titled Tranquillity Restored By Love, The Dancing Nymphs and Mars Making Peace Between Two Provinces. The engravings are mounted in an antique gilded frame. The reverse bears a label for Grundy & Smith, Ancient & Modern Printsellers, Repository for Pictures and Watercolour Drawings, Picture Frame Manufacturers, with an address, 4 Exchange Street, Manchester. Judging from the print type on the label, I consider the engravings were framed in this frame in the mid 19thc. It is possible that these engravings have been printed onto extremely fine silk or a satinised paper. The effect is to give them a lustrous finish, and depth. There is very slight bubbling up, mostly on the Mars scene. But it makes no difference to the timeless quality of the artistry. A beautiful antique picture.
The image size is 14x11cm.
