Impressive large mixed media oileograph portrait of a young Northern European girl possibly Italian, standing knitting a garment in a street setting by the corner of a stone building and next to a long rise of steps.
Produced in the manner of the late 19th century period with the appearance of a fine masterpiece.
This fine portrait is very much in the manner of French artist Bouguereau who was an academic painter.
In his realistic genre paintings he used mythological themes, making modern interpretations of classical subjects, with an emphasis on the female human body.
During his life, he enjoyed significant popularity in France and the United States, was given numerous official honors, and received top prices for his work.
As the quintessential salon painter of his generation, he was reviled by the Impressionist avant-garde.
By the early twentieth century, Bouguereau and his art fell out of favor with the public, due in part to changing tastes.
In the 1980s, a revival of interest in figure painting led to a rediscovery of Bouguereau and his works.
Throughout the course of his life, Bouguereau executed 822 known finished paintings, although the whereabouts of many are still unknown.
Mixed Media Oileograph
The picture is produced on canvas and has been finished with mixed media of inks and hand embellished in oil paint and clear gesso laid on in stages and layers to produce a finish with depth, texture and realism, which is known as an Oileograph.
An oileograph is a method of mounting an high quality coloured lithograph onto real canvas in order to produce a visual finish virtually indistinguishable from the original old masters and are finished to a very high standard.
This particular picture had been one of a selection which was cleared with other contents from a 5 million pound property in Essex, and was on display as a replacement option by the owners instead of hanging very expensive originals costing a small fortune to insure.
Excellent overall order with just a few very minor hard to see marks to frame edge, such a beautiful portrait that depicts this life like image, ready to hang.
Height: 41 Inches ( 104 cm )
Width : 35 Inches ( 88 cm )
Mounted within this magnificent heavy duty antique style ornate swept gilt frame which greatly enhances the portrait. The frame is an expensive gallery standard example which would have cost a considerable sum to purchase, around 400 or so.
Such a magnificent image that will grace any wall, room, study, library, home and office.
