Huge Victorian Snake Brooch in Irish Bog Oak

19th century
Description

A glorious large Victorian brooch in bog oak, with a typical Irish design believed to be Muckross Abbey in Killarney. Less typically, the scene is framed by a snake eating its own tail - the ancient ouroboros symbol representing eternal destruction and rebirth.

To the Victorians snakes were a potent symbol which represented the opposing forces of good and evil, fertility and rebirth, poison and medicine. When Albert gave Victoria a gem-studded snake engagement ring in 1837 serpent motifs became even more popular as a symbol of commitment, wisdom and everlasting love.

The detail of this brooch is gorgeous - with beautiful finely carved trees and architectural elements.

Secures with a simple C clasp in silver colour metal.

In excellent antique condition.

Size: Approximately 6 x 7.3cm.

Weight: 19.7g.
