Antique American Smith & Co Maple 9 Drawer Twin Pedestal Writing Desk C1860

19th century
Description

Antique Stephen Smith & Co Maple 9 Drawer Twin Pedestal Desk

Please note; Sale is for the desk only, items placed around the table are not included in the sale.

A stunning American Maple desk, ideal for any period study or office.

We are delighted to offer this beautiful condition Antique American (circa 1860s's) twin pedestal writing desk made from solid Maple, ideal for any period study or office. Made by the well respected Maker Stephen Smith & Co of Boston, America, this desk is made with true craftsmanship and quality bearing the faint but readable makers stencil in the middle drawer.

A brief history of the company taken from the university of Michigans archives;

For Nearly half a century, Stephen Smith worked as a cabinetmaker in Boston, beginning as a relatively small artisan and building his trade into a substantial firm with 3 partners. Stephen Smith & Co was founded in 1829 having a brisk trade in the manufacture of office and church furniture, cabinetry, clocks and even dealing in stoves (manufactured by his brother in law), going on to specialise in "bank and counting room furniture". At one level, business seems to have dominated Smith's life. The 1865 business directory lists Stephen Smith & Company, included George H. Crocker, James Norris, and George L Smith (brother) as partners. The firm remained in business until at least 1877.

The desk has a long history and provenance having been previously owned by the fine painter Richard Beer.

This lovely desk features its original lovely French polished finish with a nice warm colour with idyllic patina and its original Brown nicely worn desk leather with great character which is framed by the maple moulded edge.

There are many reasons we love this stunning desk but probably the main of them is for its beautiful timeworn wear and patina throughout.

The desk features panel moulded sides, curved kneehole middle drawer with a lovely round carved escutcheon, complete with 8 pedestal drawers with moulded edges and its stunning carved foliage handles. As a sign of quality cabinetry, the drawers fit into the carcass up-side down, meaning the frame and drawers are all square and true.

This desk is ideal to be used as a centre desk or a small partners desk as the back is polished. This very usable desk is ideal for a desktop computer or a laptop with the bonus of being able to store the folded laptop in the middle drawer and lock it away with the included key. The desk could also be used as a hall or console table as it is narrow and not too intrusive.

We have sympathetically restored, cleaned and waxed this item to enhance the French polished surface and preserve it for many years to come.

This desk is a fixed desk and does not comes apart like many twin pedestal desks do, this makes this desk very solid and does not rock, move or creak like some can .

Please note; This item is in great condition for its age as shown by the photographs, however, being an antique item of this age there may be minor blemishes here and there which we feel adds to its originality and heritage of the piece.
