An interesting Grand Tour style cast metal miniature version of the Luxor obelisk in Place de la Concorde, Paris with attached vertical centigrade temperature gauge c1900. Though the Grand Tour was mainly in the 17th and 18thc, it continued long after that and this piece no doubt was made as a memento for continuing tourists in later times. The Luxor obelisk was brought to Paris in approx 1830. This item repeats the Egyptian hieroglyphs on the sides, with scientific and travel images around the base. It is fitted with a fine glass centigrade temperature gauge which is in working order. Over the last few weeks it has recorded the temperature accurately! It is difficult to date and accordingly I have reckoned it to the late 19th/early 20thc. An interesting item, perfect for table or desk top.
