Victorian Wall Light

19th century
Description

A pretty antique brass wall light dating from the late 19th Century. It is a good quality piece with two arms and glass frilled shades.

It is in good condition for its age and displays well. There are signs of age and use but no major damages or anything detrimental. A couple of the screws that hold the shades in place have been replaced at some point but the shades are still firmly held in place.

It has been re-wired to modern standards to take bayonet bulbs. We would always recommend that the light is installed by a professional electrician.

The best description comes from the photographs so please look at them all carefully and if you have any questions just ask.

Archival Detail
Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Victorian double wall sconces feature two symmetrical branching arms extending from a central decorative backplate, often decorated with foliate, scrollwork, or reeded motifs. They were designed to hold two light sources, originally gas jets or early electric bulbs, framed by decorative glass shades.

These lighting fixtures were primarily cast in solid brass, bronze, or gilded metal alloys. The accompanying shades were typically made from acid-etched, frosted, or press-moulded glass, frequently finished with ruffled or cranberry edges.

Authentic pieces feature cast metal backplates showing minor surface casting irregularities, natural age-related oxidisation, and hand-turned brass fittings. Original glass shades often display slight variations in thickness and hand-etched floral patterns.

Install sconces in pairs alongside a chimney breast, within a hallway alcove, or flanking an entry mirror to provide soft ambient lighting. The warm brass finish creates visual warmth against dark moody paint palettes or heritage wallpapers.

Clean the metal casting with a dry, soft cloth to preserve the natural patina, avoiding harsh liquid chemical polishes. Glass shades should be removed carefully and washed separately in lukewarm water with mild detergent before reattaching.
