Antique 17th Century Jacobean Oak Chest of 6 Drawers

A truly remarkable and historic English heritage piece.

We are delighted to bring to you one of the finest examples of a very rare Jacobean period Circa 1680, 6 deep drawer Oak chest of drawers.

This chest is one of the first instances of a chest of drawers as we know it today. Looking at the design and construction you can see how the chest of drawers evolved from the coffer chest. This lovely chest has primitive construction with pegs, dowels and nails complete with some of the earliest use of its somewhat crude dovetails.

The chest features a rather unusual drawer layout of a double 2 over 1 complete with faux lock holes to the centre rails to almost confuse the eye. The chest also features canted frontal corners incorporating applied half turned finial moudlings between. The chest has a striking Geometric design throughout with mouldings around every drawer complete with period correct brass tear drop dropper handles (have been replaced at some point but using correct 17th C handles). The chest has simple framed and panelled sides, mouldings around the top and the base which fall to its well proportioned turned bun feet. The chest is in an outstanding original condition featuring its original deep Jacobean dark Oak colour and original wax polished finish with idillic patina and charm.

The dovetailed solid Oak drawers are in great condition and are very smoothly operating with little drawer wear and operate on the grooved side runners as opposed to running along the bottoms as later chests do. The 2 larger drawers feature their original front to back Oak drawer bottoms, the smaller may have been replaced at a later date but are running smoothly.

Please note; This item is in fantastic condition for its age as shown by the photographs below. Being an antique item of this age there are obviously marks, scratches and dents, however, we feel that these points are which adds to its charm and character to a piece.
