Magnificent Double Action Writing Box in Coromandel & Brass by Howell James & Co.

19th century
Sold by Puckerings
Description

The Creme de la Creme of writing slopes, quite outstanding, a once in a lifetime opportunity. Made from exotic Coromandel and mounted with the most spectacular cast brass fittings. The oval plate to the top is present to be engraved, perfect for a special presentation or as a wedding gift, engraved it would make the most exceptional heirloom for generations to come. The brass strapping is present all around, top quality with two heavy cast brass handles.

As if the outside wasn't special enough, the interior is too breathtaking. The lid lifts to reveal a completely original gilded interior with three writing slates set into an engraved surround. Behind this all remains intact also with a thick and heavy removable pen tray, a lidded compartment each side which would have been for sealing wax and a personal seal. The far left-hand compartment retains the original Berry's Patent Travel Inkwell and to the far right the matching Light or Vesta, the handle even with the hole to hold the match to melt the sealing wax and doubling as a Go-To-Bed.

The interior of the lid is all original, as good as they get with gilded mounts and the original Ivory desk accessories. So special and well engineered is this box, there is a button at the top engraved "Press", when pressed the stationery compartment springs forward, making it easy to retrieve ones stationery; it then snaps back into place once finished with. The piano hinge and side hinges are the best that can be found, the right hinge locking into place when the box is opened to keep the lid open and secure when being used, this hinge requires a squeeze to close the box.

This highly desirable design of writing slope or lap desk is know as double action as the front portion opens further to reveal the gilded leather writing surfaces. Both top and bottom open again and reveal a Satinwood lining.

Dating to around 1860, a true Victorian beauty and not to be missed. A true gem for the discerning. Excellent condition, measuring 14" wide x 10 1/2" deep x 7 3/4" tall, while closed.
