Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

An 18th-century French decorative panel is a painted canvas, paper, or wood section used as architectural wall covering or inset boiserie in aristocratic and country homes. These panels often featured classical grotesques, floral festoons, or chinoiserie scenes typical of the Rococo and Neoclassical periods.

Traditional 18th-century French panels were crafted using hand-block printed or hand-painted rag paper and canvas stretched over timber frames. Pigments were typically tempera or distemper mixed with natural binders, applied over gesso priming.

Authentic 18th-century panels exhibit signs of age such as natural craquelure, seam lines from joined sheets of handmade rag paper, and oxidisation of pigments. Structural backing usually shows hand-sawn timber strainers, hand-forged nails, and irregularities consistent with period craftsmanship.

A painted antique panel can serve as a focal point mounted above a sideboard or console table to add historic texture to a contemporary room. It can also be framed as standalone wall art or positioned in a narrow hallway to introduce subtle colour and pattern.

To preserve an antique painted panel, keep it away from direct sunlight, extreme humidity, and direct heat sources. Dust the surface lightly with a soft, dry natural-bristle brush, avoiding liquid cleaners or abrasive cloths which can damage fragile pigments.
