Sir John Comyns was made sergeant-at-law in 1705, and knighted in 1726.
A Line engraving on paper by George Vertue, after unknown artist, title: “Sir John Comyns, Chief Baron of the Exchequer” created in 1744, is in Scottish National Portrait Gallery Print Room. The portrait galleries line engraving (image included) shows striking similarities to the oil painting we are selling.
Notes: A successful lawyer, who wrote two important legal treatises, one of which was hailed as being ‘exceedingly clear and perspicuous, and at the same time, remarkably concise and exact’. He rebuilt Hylands, on a Greek temple design, and remodeled Guy Harlings in Chelmsford, in white brick. He also bought the manor at Writtle, and owned land in Kent

The tanner''s timber framed house, across the road from Dagenham Parish Church, dates from c1500 and is now the Cross Keys P.H., and the oldest secular building in the borough. His tomb at Writtle Church is surmounted by a bust by Sir Henry Cheere.
