Oak Longcase Clock By Stephen Wilmshurst Working From 1694-1735
Status:This item has been sold Sold by:Buckingham Interiors
A most attractive and original oak cased 30 hr longcase clock by Stephen Wilmshurst of Basingstoke. There are two makers of this name recorded, one dating to 1695-1705 ~(Loomes) and the other1791(Baillie). The Baillie record is as a watchmaker, so it is probably safe to assume this clock relates to the earlier date, making it an early and very attractive longcase clock. The clock is of nice slender proportions measuring 199cm in height, with a long door. The hood is 41cm wide & the depth 25cm. There are one or two shrinkage cracks to the base as would be expected in a clock of its age. The backboard is sound and I cannot see any evidence of woodworm. The case is unrestored and could do with a good polish which I am sure would greatly enhance its appearance. The movement is clean and has been oiled using clock oil, it is counter wheel striking on a bell, and the movement is of ''birdcage'' construction, again an indication of its age. The movement is clean and works well. The bell is so...und. The 10'' dial is beautifully engraved and has a fine chapter ring the hours marked in Roman numerals and the minutes in Arabic numerals. Original small lead weight and pulley wheel. Rope pulley. All in all a very old and original clock. The age of the case and clock movement certainly appear to match though there can never be any certainty about this
