Oak Longcase Clock By Stephen Wilmshurst Working From 1694-1735

A most attractive and original oak cased 30 hr longcase clock by Stephen Wilmshurst of Basingstoke. There are two makers of this name recorded, one dating to 1695-1705 ~(Loomes) and the other1791(Baillie). The Baillie record is as a watchmaker, so it is probably safe to assume this clock relates to the earlier date, making it an early and very attractive longcase clock. The clock is of nice slender proportions measuring 199cm in height, with a long door. The hood is 41cm wide & the depth 25cm. There are one or two shrinkage cracks to the base as would be expected in a clock of its age. The backboard is sound and I cannot see any evidence of woodworm. The case is unrestored and could do with a good polish which I am sure would greatly enhance its appearance. The movement is clean and has been oiled using clock oil, it is counter wheel striking on a bell, and the movement is of ''birdcage'' construction, again an indication of its age.
