Late C19th French bronze ‘Grand Tour’ souvenir study, after the antique, “Faun with Pipes” by Ferdinand Barbedienne foundry.
Well cast bronze reduction of the antique marble original itself probably a copy of a lost original by the Greek sculptor Lysippus , now housed in the Louvre Museum, Paris , France.
Acquired by Napoleon Bonaparte in 1807 as part the Villa Borghese family collection in Rome and brought to Paris .
The mythical woodland faun is depicted casually leaning on a tree stump which is draped with a lion’s skin pelt , whilst playing the flute or pipes , associated with the feast of wine , merriment and the cult of Bacchus.
He is shown in this example naked except for a fig-leaf concealing his modesty.
Good consistent colour and patina, the rear edge of the base bearing the signature of the Ferdinand Barbedienne Foundry , established in 1838 in Paris , France . Also bears the stamp of Achille Collas , whose patented pantograph method was used in partnership with the bronze foundry, to accurately produce reductions of large classical statutory and objects .
