Pair of large late C19th French Napoleon III period gilt metal wine-coolers of circular form, after ‘Clodion’.
 
Impressively scaled pair of gilded wine-coolers cast with Bacchus masks and the frieze of the neck with cavorting amorini or cherubs celebrating the wine harvest and cult of Bacchus, god of wine .
 
The cherub-surmounted detachable covers revealing removable zinc-liners for holding chilled wine or champagne bottles . The handles being cast as intertwined grape-vines . The bases cast with two cherub figures filling a basket of grapes , their celebratory musical instruments behind them.
 
In the style of the C18th French sculptor Claude Michel (1738-1814) , known as ‘Clodion’ .
 
In excellent original condition, the gilt having a gently worn surface with a ‘soft’ hue .
