A classic Roman sculpture, the Doryphorus or Spear-bearer is a later copy of the original bronze by Greek sculptor Polykleitos, adapted from his written work on figural proportion known as Canon. The Roman statue is believed to have been crafted before the eruption of Mount Vesuvius in 79CE and endured as a lasting veneration of Greek arts by Roman society.
