An English ‘Barleycorn Pattern’ Bone Chess Set, 19th Century

one side stained red, the other side left natural, kings and queens with multi baluster knops, bishops with split mitres, knights as carved horses’ heads and rooks as monobloc turrets, pawns with turned reeded bases and ball finials, in a wooden box with a hinged lid and two hinged clasps.

King: 10.1cm high

Pawn: 3.9cm

Box: 17.6cm x 16cm x 7.4cm

Note: The classic English chess pattern. Used throughout the Victorian period as an alternative to the Staunton pattern (invented in 1849).
