Antique 1908 Sterling Silver Salt Bowl

1900 - 1920
For Sale by Beeches Vintage
Description

This is a lovely Antique Sterling Silver Salt Bowl from the early 1900s. It would be perfect for storing a few rings in. It comes in a gift bag so it’d be a great present.

The maker’s mark and Hallmarks are quite worn but it was made by Joseph Gloster and it was Hallmarked in Birmingham in 1908.

The bowl has three very elegant feet and a pretty design to the rim. The silver is shiny with some spots of tarnish, particularly to the inside of the bowl which adds to the antique look.

It weighs 27.8g. The diameter is 4.8cm (1 7/8 inches). The height is 3.3cm (just over 1 1/4 inches).

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A sterling silver salt cellar, also known as an open salt or salt dip, is a small vessel designed to hold loose salt on a dining table prior to the widespread adoption of free-flowing salt shakers.

Salt cellars were typically crafted from solid sterling silver, often featuring raised legs, scalloped rims, and occasionally fitted with glass liners to protect the metal from salt corrosion.

Authentic Edwardian silver pieces bear official British hallmarks, including the lion passant for sterling fineness, a town mark, date letter, and makers mark stamped directly into the metal.

An antique silver salt cellar can be styled on a dining table as a condiment dish, repurposed on a dressing table to hold small rings, or displayed on a tray in a study.

Clean sterling silver with a soft cloth and a specialised silver polish, avoiding harsh chemical cleaners, and store in a dry location to minimise oxidisation.
