Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

The Madonna and Child representation depicts the Virgin Mary cradling the infant Jesus Christ, serving as a central devotional motif in Christian iconography since the Byzantine era. Mid-20th-century iterations often incorporated modern stylistic simplifications while preserving traditional ecclesiastical iconography.

Mid-century ecclesiastical sculptures were typically constructed from carved wood, cast plaster, or terracotta, finished with polychrome paint, gesso, and gold leaf detailing. Larger figures frequently featured metal accoutrements, such as brass or wire halos.

Authentic 20th-century statues feature hand-painted details, natural surface patination, and minor wear to the paint or gesso layers around handling points. Inspecting the underside of the base for maker marks, stencils, or artist signatures provides additional verification of age.

A mid-century religious sculpture can function as a focal point when placed in an architectural alcove, on a console table, or within a quiet reading corner. Pairing the figure with neutral backdrops and muted lighting highlights its form and texture.

Clean painted religious sculptures gently using a soft, dry microfibre cloth or a natural bristle brush to remove dust. Avoid applying water, cleaning solutions, or wax polishes, as moisture can dissolve original tempera finishes and destabilise gesso layers.
