Antique Folding Games Board with Chess Set

1900 - 1920
Description

A lovely example of a folding wooden games box dating from the early 20th century. On the outside it has a playing board for chess on one side and nine men's morris on the other. It is held closed by a small metal latch. When opened the box folds out to a backgammon board inside.

It is a good quality box with the outer boards being made with inlaid marquetry woods of different colours and an ebonised outer edge. The inner backgammon board colours are a little cruder and just painted on.

The box comes with an associated wooden chess set which, although later and not original to the box, is a good size for the squares.

The box is in good condition and displays well. There are signs of age and use, some surface marks and small losses but no major damages and it is certainly very usable.

Approximate Measurements :

Height : 2" (5 cm)

Width of board : 10 1/2" (27 cm) squared

Squares : 1 1/4" (3 cm) squared

The best description comes from the photographs so please look at them all carefully and if you have any questions just ask.

Archival Detail
Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.
