G.W. Butland (fl1831-1843): An impressive and large gilt framed coastal oil painting on canvas by this well-respected maritime, landscape and coastal scenes artist. Butland exhibited at the RA, BI and SS between 1831-1843. He lived in the City of London, Greenhithe in Kent and later in Fulham. Signed and dated to the lower right corner (on the end of a log, next to a barrel). This is a coastal scene entitled “View of the Sussex Coast” taking in not just sea-faring craft but details of the shoreline and harbour.
