An Interesting Antique English Rosewood and Boxwood Chess Set, 19th Century

kings with extended columns and turned finials, queens with turned ball finials, bishops with open mitres, knights as carved horses’ heads, rooks as stepped turrets, pawns with baluster knops and ball finials, the chessmen with baizes to the undersides in a hinged wooden box with a light blue/green lining.

King: 9.6cm

Pawn: 3.9cm

Box: 22.5cm wide, 15cm deep, 7.5cm high

Interesting and unusual 19th century English chess pattern. Similar to the ‘Calvert' pattern, or a variation, perhaps, on the 'St George' or 'Old English' patterns. The rosewood side features attractive stratifactions and patination. A lovely antique chess set. Recommended.
