Antique 1913 Small Silver Inkwell

1900 - 1920
For Sale by Beeches Vintage
Description

Here we have a beautiful Antique Sterling Silver Inkwell from the early 1900s. It’s a smaller size inkwell, perfect for sitting on a desk and using for calligraphy.

It comes in a gift bag and would be a great present.

The maker’s marks are worn but it possibly was made by J & R Griffin and it was Hallmarked in Chester in 1913.

The inkwell is capstan shaped and made of Sterling Silver. The Hallmarks are on the side and it has a very pretty ring pattern to it. The hinge for the lid works well and it lifts to show a plastic liner to hold ink.

It’s in good condition with the Silver shiny and some tarnish, particularly in the rings. It would be a great present for someone who enjoys calligraphy.

It is filled and it weighs 140g. It’s a smaller size inkwell, measuring 7.4cm diameter (2 7/8 inches) with a height of 4.5cm (1 3/4 inches).

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A capstan inkwell is a desktop ink container shaped like a nautical capstan, featuring a wide circular base tapering upwards to a narrower neck with a hinged lid. Popular during the late Victorian and Edwardian eras, this design provided stability to prevent accidental spills.

Antique silver inkwells are typically crafted from sterling silver or silver plate, often filled with lead or resin at the base for stability. Inside, they generally feature a clear or dark glass liner to hold the ink and protect the silver from corrosion.

Authentic British silver inkwells carry a complete set of hallmarks stamped into the metal, including a town mark, lion passant for sterling quality, date letter, and makers mark. These marks are often found on both the main body and the inner rim of the hinged lid.

An antique silver inkwell works exceptionally well placed on an office desk, a stacked set of hardback books, or alongside leather-bound journals. It serves as a sophisticated tactile accent piece within traditional, dark academia, or eclectic study interiors.

Clean silver inkwells with a soft cloth and a specialised silver polishing cream, taking care not to rub aggressively over hallmarks. Ensure any glass liners are cleaned separately with warm water and mild soap, drying thoroughly before reinserting.
