Set of four decorative C19th Chinese framed lacquer panels in the style of C18th Chinese export ‘Bantam’ or ‘Coromandel’ work .
Atmospheric set of four incised and lacquer-work panels in ebonised matt finish frames with crimson red slips , the decoration depicting traditional Chinese figural and landscape scenes with pavilions and trellis fences.
Bantamwork or Cormandel Chinese lacquer of this type was a term applied to a process of fashionable C17th and C18th lacquer decoration where a design was incised into a layer of gesso and then lacquered with colours . It is assumed the work was named after Bantam in Java or Coromandel Coast , which played an important part in the export of oriental crafts to Europe.
Each frame fitted with a heavy-duty cast brass Chinese key design hanging plate .
In as found ‘country-house’, condition with some minor losses and shrinkage splits to all panels but having achieved a hugely appealing aged and distressed period feel and patina.
Panels of this type were often made from the component parts of large folding Chinese bantamwork screens, sometimes also reconstructed to create furniture.
