Antique Oak Spoon Rack with 3 Pewter Trefid Spoons

18th century
Description

This 18th Century Antique Oak Spoon Rack is probably English and clearly has had a somewhat hard life, having lost it's right hand ear as well as having suffered a recent chip. It comes however with three Late 17th / Early 18th Century English Pewter Trefid Spoons, one of which has been repaired at some point in the distant past. Once upon a time to be found in many a cottage kitchen, while they may not appear glamourous, these early pewter spoons now rarely turn up and are today extremely difficult to source. The perfect gift for the lover of country living !

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Historically, wall-mounted spoon racks were functional household fixtures in European homes, particularly throughout the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries, designed to store and display precious metal or wooden eating utensils prominently near the hearth or dining area.

Spoon racks were commonly crafted from regional hardwoods like oak, pine, or walnut, featuring carved decoration. The accompanying spoons were typically cast in pewter, silver, or latten metal, with the trefid shape originating in the mid-seventeenth century.

Authentic period pieces display age-appropriate surface patination, hand-carved joinery marks, and oxidation on metal components. Pewter spoons often bear touchmarks on the stem or bowl, indicating the maker or quality control stamps.

A carved wooden spoon rack can be hung on a narrow kitchen wall, in a dining alcove, or alongside rustic cabinetry to introduce historical texture and contrast against contemporary surfaces.

Carved wood should be kept dry and periodically treated with a natural beeswax polish applied with a soft brush to preserve the finish. Antique pewter requires gentle cleaning with warm soapy water, avoiding abrasive chemicals that strip its aged patina.
