Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A linenfold oak coffer is a traditional wooden storage chest decorated with carved panels designed to imitate the folds of folded linen cloth. Popular throughout Northern Europe during the late medieval and Renaissance periods, these pieces served as primary storage for textiles, household linens, and valuables.

17th-century coffers were constructed using solid joinery techniques, typically featuring oak framing joined by mortise and tenon joints held in place with wooden pegs. The structure incorporates floating inset panels, such as linenfold carvings, to accommodate the natural expansion and contraction of the timber.

Authentic period coffers display hand-hewn timber marks, irregular peg placement, and natural shrinkage across wood grain widths over time. Original period metalwork, such as iron or brass escutcheons and hinges, will show uneven hand-forged characteristics and localized patination.

A period oak coffer functions effectively as a focal point in an entry hallway, at the foot of a bed, or as a low console behind a seating arrangement. The rich timber texture offers visual weight and pairs well with neutral textiles, stone surfaces, and clean-lined contemporary decor.

Maintain the surface by dusting regularly with a soft dry cloth and applying a clear beeswax polish once or twice a year along the grain. Keep the piece away from direct heat sources and extreme humidity fluctuations to prevent the timber from splitting or warping.
