Large late C19th French’Grand Tour’ souvenir bronze study , after the antique, of “The Borghese Gladiator”.
Superbly detailed casting of the iconic warrior mounted upon a ‘rouge griotte’ marble plinth base . The original Hellenistic life-size marble sculpture was sculpted around 100 BC at Ephesus , is now on display in the Louvre Museum, Paris , France.
Rediscovered near Anzio, Italy , in 1610 , the sculpture became part of the Borghese collection at Villa Borghese in Rome before being acquired by Napoleon and taken to Paris . Copies can be found in the collections of the great museums and noble houses of the world, including Houghton Hall, Blenheim Palace , and Chatsworth House in England.
In excellent original condition with a rich dark brown patination and surface.
