We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A 17th-century polychrome figure is a carved wooden sculpture painted with multiple layers of coloured pigments, often incorporating gesso preparation layers and metallic detailing. These sculptures were crafted across Continental Europe for ecclesiastical settings, civic buildings, and private shrines.

Craftsmen used seasoned European hardwoods such as oak, lime, or walnut carved using chisels and gouges. Surfaces were prepared with a gesso ground made from animal glue and chalk before hand-mixed mineral pigments and gilding were applied.

Authentic period pieces exhibit tool marks consistent with manual carving, along with natural timber shrinkage, stress fissures, and flight holes from historic wood-boring insects. Original polychromy typically demonstrates craquelure, paint loss on exposed relief points, and evidence of historical re-painting.

A large figure operates as an architectural focal point when set against a plain plaster wall or within a structural alcove. Designers frequently contrast these textured, dark-wood forms against modern minimalist furniture or integrate them into dark academia curated displays.

Maintain a stable indoor humidity level between 45% and 55% to prevent the timber from expanding and cracking the paint layers. Remove surface dust using a soft dry brush, avoiding liquids, solvent cleaners, or heavy paste waxes that can damage surviving historical pigments.
