18th-century Danish School, Miniature Portrait Of A Gentleman - Antique Oil Painting

Status: This item has been sold
Sold by: Brave Fine Art

This charming mid-18th-century oval Danish portrait miniature depicts a good-humoured gentleman dressed in a three-piece suit with white stock.

Engaging, alive and natural, he’s presenting the image of an enlightened soul. Dodging the trappings of ostentation in favour of an elegant woollen suit. His eyes are soft yet brimming with personality.

Painted in around 1760, his fashion is inspired by the English - it’s simple, comparatively practical, and alludes to a country lifestyle. Modest compared to previous decades. Note Gainsborough’s self-portrait from circa 1759.

There’s a gentle quality, an air of calm assuredness. Perhaps he’s a man who enjoyed poetry, literature, and the arts.

Held in its original 18th-century gilt frame.
