Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

An overmantel mirror is a large mirror specifically designed to hang or sit directly above a fireplace mantlepiece. Popularised in the 18th and 19th centuries, these mirrors served to reflect light and act as a central architectural feature in reception rooms.

19th-century mirror frames were typically constructed from softwoods such as pine or lime, often coated with gesso and decorated with paint, gilding, or carved mouldings. The mirror plates were generally made of blown glass silvered with mercury or silver nitrate.

Authentic period mirrors often display natural age characteristics, including unevenness or grey spotting (foxing) on the silvering, hand-cut wooden backing boards, and genuine surface patina or naturally chipped paint where underlying gesso shows.

A distressed overmantel mirror can be mounted above a contemporary fireplace hearth, styled on a console table, or positioned against a neutral wall to add texture, vertical scale, and light reflection to modern minimalist or eclectic spaces.

Clean the glass carefully using a soft cloth lightly dampened with glass cleaner, avoiding contact with the frame. Dust the painted wooden frame gently with a dry, soft-bristled brush to prevent flaking off fragile paint or gesso layers.
