Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

The slant-front bureau gained widespread popularity across Britain during the early eighteenth century as written correspondence increased among the rising merchant class. Constructed primarily from native English oak, these units served a dual purpose as both secure writing stations and compact storage chests.

Bureaus from this period were typically built from solid oak, featuring hand-dovetailed drawer joints, hand-planed backboards, and carved bracket feet. Secondary timbers such as pine or chestnut were frequently used for drawer linings, while brass drop handles and decorative escutcheons provided functional hardware.

Authentic period bureaus display uneven, hand-cut dovetail joints, evidence of pit-sawn or hand-planed timber marks on the rear, and natural shrinkage cracks along wide timber panels over time. Hardware usually shows slight asymmetry, with iron screws featuring hand-cut threads and off-centre slots.

An antique oak bureau acts as a focal piece in a modern study, living space, or hallway. Pair the dark timber with clean neutral walls, contemporary task lighting, and minimal decorative accessories to balance historical features with modern aesthetic lines.

Apply a clear, natural beeswax polish once or twice a year using a soft cotton cloth to maintain the timber finish. Position the bureau away from direct heat sources and radiators to prevent wood movement, cracking, or veneer lifting caused by humidity fluctuations.
