Set of Twelve 17th Century Derbyshire Back Stools – Ten Standards and Two Carvers C. 1680

17th century
Description

From a local estate, a beautiful and rarely found true set of twelve Derbyshire back stools each with relief carved horizontal splats set with open flower heads, scrolls and foliage.

.

The uprights with punched decoration and scrolled carved terminals.

.

Original throughout including the boarded seats which are set within a well turned and blocked underframe. The front stretchers bulb turned and the splats applied with drop finials. Peg jointed, heavy and sturdy.

.

The set comes with drop in seat pads, eight are early 19th century and hand embroidered and four have been later recovered in a plain blue velvet. The chairs sat around two tables in different rooms of the house but are one true set. The seat pads can easily be re-upholstered if required to match your decor.

.

The whole set has a consistently beautiful rich and warm colour. The seats, splats and arms have particularly good patination. The well turned front stretchers with a little natural wear from centuries of use and there are a few small repairs/restorations to some of the chairs but nothing structural or unusual. The chairs are in truly excellent condition for age with no movement in the joints or weakness in the structure and no replaced timbers.

.

An absolutely super set of early Derbyshire back stools. Marvellous!

.

.

Dimensions are:

.

Carvers – 20.5 inches wide, 21 inches deep and 42 inches high. Floor to seat is 17.5 inches.

.

Standards – 18.5 inches wide, 16 inches deep and 41 inches high. Floor to seat is 17.5 inches.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.
