John Falconar Slater Oil on Board

1900 - 1920
Description

An impressionistic farmyard scene depicting haystack and barn with chickens and ducks in the foreground.

John Falconar Slater (1857-1937) was a Northumbrian artist who painted a wide range of subjects in oils and watercolours exhibiting prolifically in the North East of England. He is affectionately known as the “weatherproof artist” for his practice of painting outdoors in all conditions. He was a member of the Bewick Club, the President of the North East Art Club, based in Whitley Bay, and a leading member of the Cullercoats Colony. Many of his works reside in galleries across the country, including the National Maritime Museum and the Laing Art Gallery.

Towards the end of his career, he became influenced by the French impressionists such as Monet. We believe this can be seen in this painting.

Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

British Impressionism from this era is defined by visible impasto brushwork, a focus on natural light, and rustic landscape subjects executed en plein air or in studio settings.

Artists frequently utilised rigid wooden boards or prepared millboard primed with gesso, applying oil pigments directly to create durable textured compositions.

Authenticity is evaluated through artist signatures, characteristic brush techniques, age-appropriate board aging, and documented provenance or gallery labels.

A classic oil painting can be styled above a sideboard, mantelpiece, or within a gallery wall to introduce texture and colour contrast against contemporary backdrop walls.

Dust the surface gently using a soft, dry camel-hair brush, avoiding liquid cleaners, and display the painting away from direct sunlight, dampness, and heat sources.
