Antique 1920 Sterling Silver Cake Knife

1900 - 1920
For Sale by Beeches Vintage
Description

This is a beautiful Antique Cake Knife with a Sterling Silver Blade. It would be perfect for cutting a wedding cake or bakery items.

It comes in its original presentation box and would be a fantastic gift, particularly for a couple getting married oras a housewarming present.

It was made by CW Fletcher & Son and it was Hallmarked in Sheffield in 1920.

The blade is made of shiny Sterling Silver with the maker’s mark and Hallmarks on one side. It has a slightly pointy end and a serrated design to the top of the blade. The handle is beautifully smooth Mother of Pearl which shows all the lovely colours Pearl has.

It’s in good condition and has obviously been treasured and looked after. The end of the blade has a very slight kink to the end but it wouldn’t affect it’s use. The presentation box has some scuffs but the hinge and clasp work well.

The knife measures 20.8cm in length (just under 8 1/4 inches).

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Sterling silver cake knives gained prominence during the Victorian and Edwardian eras as formal afternoon tea and dining rituals expanded. Designed specifically for slicing cakes and pastries cleanly, they were frequently gifted for weddings and special occasions, complete with fitted presentation boxes.

Pieces from this era typically combine hallmarked sterling silver blades with carved mother of pearl or silver handles. Presentation boxes are constructed from velvet, silk, and structured leatherette.

Authentic British sterling silver features clear hallmarks stamped into the blade or collar, including the lion passant mark for purity, an assay office stamp, a date letter, and a makers mark.

An antique cased cake knife can be displayed open on a sideboard, stored within a glazed dresser, or integrated into modern dessert tables and afternoon tea settings to add historic texture.

Hand wash gently in warm water with mild soap and dry immediately with a soft cloth. Never submerge mother of pearl handles in water or place them in dishwashers, and store in a dry presentation case to prevent silver tarnish.
