18th Century Georgian Mahogany Stool

18th century
Description

A Good Quality Late 18th Century, English, Georgian Mahogany Stool Of Rectangular Form, Having Upholstered Seat Raised On Elegant Square Tapered Legs And Stretchers.

This simple georgian mahogany stool is a great example of utilitarian, 18th century, english furniture. It is well made using good quality mahogany timbers and is just as fit for purpose as the day it was made.

The fabric covering of the seat is relatively recently replaced, although there are a few small, light, minor marks to the fabric which may well be able to be cleaned out using the right product and technique. However the overall upholstery is very much sound and should one wish to just replace the fabric covering then this should be very easily and inexpensively done.

It is great for a variety of spaces around the home, including as a dressing table stool, a clothes horse in the corner of the bedroom, an additional emergency seat in the living room, or even perhaps as a form of coffee table with a tray placed on top of it.

As with all items which we offer for sale it has been inspected by our highly skilled, trained traditional antique furniture restorers before being offered for sale to ensure that it is in a condition which allows it to be placed stright into the home.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Georgian stools from the 18th century are defined by symmetrical proportions and the predominant use of mahogany timber. They commonly feature square tapered or turned legs, under-stretchers for reinforcement, and upholstered seat tops.

Primary construction utilised solid West Indian or Cuban mahogany for the leg framework, joined with mortise and tenon joints. The seat frames were strung with webbing and stuffed with natural materials such as horsehair before upholstery.

Authentic 18th-century frames display hand-sawn timber marks, irregular mortise and tenon joints, and natural oxidisation on the mahogany wood. Wear patterns on the stretchers and original corner blocks beneath the seat frame also indicate period construction.

A Georgian stool functions as an occasional seat, footrest, or accent piece in contemporary living spaces. Positioned near a hearth, beside a desk, or in an entryway, the dark timber and structured upholstery provide contrast against minimalist decor.

Dust the mahogany frame regularly with a lint-free cloth and apply beeswax periodically to preserve the timber finish. Keep the stool positioned away from direct heat sources and sunlight to prevent wood shrinkage and fabric degradation.
