Fine Karaja Carpet, North-west Persia, Late 19th Century, 3.16m X 2.45m

19th century
Description

Dating to the last quarter of the 19th century, this handsome Karaja Carpet from North-West Persia has many outstanding features. First, it is an excellent size, rarely found in carpets of this region and period, and would work well in many decorative schemes both contemporary and period. The wool quality is exceptional, very soft and fleecy. The happy colours are all derived from natural sources , and have harmonised over the generations. But I particularly like the design which is composed of stylised floral and geometric ornaments arranged in an all-over design. It is dramatic and graphic, and has an armorial feel to it. Cherished over the generations, this carpet has survived in very good condition and in good pile. The selvages have been restored and it has been professionally cleaned in our own workshop.

Archival Detail
Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Originating from the Karaja region in North-West Persia, near Heriz, these hand-woven carpets are renowned for their bold geometric medallions and distinct Caucasian design influences.

They are typically hand-knotted using high-quality wool pile woven onto a durable cotton warp and weft, featuring dyes derived from natural vegetable and plant sources.

Authentic pieces display distinct central geometric medallionsoften flanked by latch-hook or hexagonal motifshand-bound selvedges, and subtle tonal colour variations known as abrash.

A bold geometric Persian rug grounds modern interior schemes by pairing structured architectural lines with warm terracotta tones, anchoring contemporary furniture arrangements.

Vacuum regularly using a suction-only attachment to prevent fibre damage, rotate the carpet annually to distribute foot traffic evenly, and treat liquid spills immediately with cold water.
