Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A vesta case, also known as a match safe, is a small portable container designed to store friction matches and keep them dry during the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Popularised in the Victorian and Edwardian eras, these pocket accessories frequently featured a ribbed striking surface on the base.

Edwardian vesta cases were predominantly crafted from sterling silver, nickel silver, brass, or gold, often featuring chased, engraved, or plain repousse designs. Sterling silver examples typically incorporate a hinged lid with a spring mechanism and a suspension ring for attachment to a pocket watch chain.

Authentic British Edwardian silver vesta cases carry official hallmarks stamped into the metal, including a makers mark, town mark, lion passant for sterling quality, and a date letter corresponding to the early 1900s. Examination of the spring hinge mechanism and integrated base striker also assists in verification.

These compact silver items serve as functional accent pieces when arranged inside a shallow display bowl, on a desk tray, or within a glass shadow box frame. They can also be integrated into a curated bookshelf arrangement alongside other vintage pocket objects.

To prevent excessive tarnish, store the case in a dry, low-humidity environment away from direct sunlight and rubber products. Gentle polishing with a soft silver cloth removes natural oxidisation without damaging delicate maker hallmarks or surface detail.
