A Beautiful and Rare Pair of Minton Porcelain Figural Candlesticks ,C.1835

19th century
Description

A very beautiful pair of Minton figural candlesticks on round bases with moulded scrolls and ornate gilt decoration on a white background decorated with applied flowers and leaves in bright enamel. Both figures are very finely modelled and beautifully decorated in enamel, with incredibly detailed patterns on the garments decorated in bright gilding. The girl is depicted as a flower seller, her apron decorated with individually designed flowers and leaves, and in her left hand she holds a small bouquet. Her male companion holds a basket of flowers and fruit under his arm and a flower in his right hand. Behind the figures are rococo candlesticks, very similar to the Coalport candlesticks, which are also inlaid with flowers and gilded details on a white background, including moulded and decorated ears of wheat.

References: Minton Pottery & Porcelain Of The First Period 1793-1850 by Godden, page 104, the figures are fully described and attributed to design No. 192, dated c. 1835-36 and illustrated on plate 146. Also in Atterbury and Butkin's Minton's Dictionary, pp. 51.

The height of the figures is 22cm, the diameter of the base is 11cm.

Condition is very good: the male figure has virtually no visible defects, except for a minimal and almost imperceptible loss of enamel on the hat on the reverse side.

The fingers of the girl's right hand have a slightly different shade than the fingers of the left hand, but this may be a firing defect.

There is a very thin, small hairline crack on the base, and two little noticeable hairline cracks on the top of the candlestick.

Otherwise, there are no visible defects.

There are a couple of small chips on some of the flowers, but these are very minor for this type of jewellery; they are in very good condition. Surface wear to the enamel and gilding is minimal.

Please look carefully at the photos - they are part of the description.

Item will be sent fully tracked and insured.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Minton figural candlesticks are decorative ceramic candle holders produced by the renowned English pottery manufacturer, often depicting pastoral figures or mythological themes influenced by 18th-century European porcelain models.

They were hand-moulded from bone china or soft-paste porcelain, fired, painted with overglaze enamel pigments, and finished with burnished gold leaf gilding.

Authentic pieces often display early impressed or painted Minton factory marks, fine encrusted floral details, precise hand painting, and characteristic Rococo scrollwork around the base.

Position them symmetrically on a sideboard, mantelpiece, or console table to add visual texture and artistic craftsmanship to a classic or eclectic interior scheme.

Dust gently with a dry, soft-bristled brush, avoiding water or abrasive chemical cleaners that could strip delicate enamel glazes or gilding.
