Jardinieres crafted from blue and white porcelain originated in China, where cobalt blue underglaze techniques developed significantly during the Tang and Ming dynasties. These decorative plant containers were widely exported to Europe from the seventeenth century onwards, becoming central elements of Chinoiserie interior design.

Traditional Chinese and European jardinieres were crafted from hard-paste porcelain or earthenware. The designs were painted by hand using cobalt oxide pigment directly onto the unfired ceramic body before applying a clear glaze and firing at high temperatures.
