The design for these chairs is inspired by Thomas Chippendale’s “ribband back” chairs, which are characterised by the intricate carved backrests with scrolls and acanthus foliage motifs. Chippendale was the leading English furniture designer of Rococo during the second half of the eighteenth century. A set of dining chairs with related features was made for the Duke of Marlborough and is discussed by Percy MacQuoid in his “Age of Mahogany.”
