Antique Georgian Sterling Silver Tureens - Neoclassical 1782

We are delighted to offer this fabulous highly elegant, yet practical, pair of antique Georgian solid sterling silver tureens made in the most fabulous neoclassical design by Benjamin Laver of London in 1782.

This pair is particularly elegant and distinguishes itself, which may come as no surprise as reflected by the maker's mark, Benjamin Laver, who was apprenticed to Thomas Hemming (Royal silversmith) whose wares, though scarce, are of very fine quality.

Upon first glance, the overall geometric proportions, curvature and exquisite neoclassical design are highly impressive and alluring. The designs on this pair are inspired by the great Georgian Neoclassical architect Robert Adam (Adam's Style) and pay homage to some of his magnificent works. The seamless oval-shaped body is supported by a pedestal foot and conjoined to two enchanting curved handles that terminate with an acanthus leaf; an effortlessly elegant yet intricate piece upon closer viewing.

The top removable lids feature a magnificent laurel leaf design with matching finials and a berried point. Two bands of finely beaded borders separate the sloped edges with a small cutout notch at the side to allow for a ladle to be placed within without disturbance.

The main body features further beaded bordering with a fabulous band/frieze of floral motifs which contrasts the surrounding mirror-like Georgian classical finish.

Interior-wise, the plain silver finish and curved bowl allows for an array of practical uses. Traditionally, such tureens would have been used for sauces, however, in the modern day, it could also be used for both savoury and dessert purposes. Whether be it for serving a portion of curry, gazpacho or sweets/berries, etc; why not get creative and indulge in an opulent manner of enjoying fine dining with historical silverware? (One tureen will hold approximately one portion of soup/curry for one person).

Paired with other silverware (such as the ladles photographed here of very close age), the pair may be elevated to its most splendid setting within fine antique interiors or even as a juxtaposing statement piece within modern interior decor - in our experience, it is often surprising how effective such neoclassical designs can compliment unlikely contemporary designs.

English hallmarks are present on both the bases of the tureens.

CONDITION

Great Condition - The pair is in great antique condition with no major issues or damage, especially considering its age with only some fine surface scratches as expected with age. The chased laurels on one of the lids are slightly more worn than the other.

For accuracy; some tiny bubbling/possible old restoration can be seen under close inspection under both finials (last 3 photos) however is hardly noticeable with the human eye from a normal distance/without it being mentioned.

We aim to overemphasize and state these issues to avoid disappointment and thus please rest assured they are not significant nor affect the usage of the items.
