Late C19th French bronze “Grand Tour” souvenir reduction , after the antique, “The Dancing Faun with Clappers”.
Well-cast bronze statue of the iconic woodland faun from Greco-Romano mythology . Depicted with pointed ears , a tail and frenzied facial expression dancing whilst holding cymbals in each hand , his foot upon a scabellum ( an Ancient Greek percussion instrument) .
The original ancient marble torso , attributed to Praxiteles of Athens was first recorded in the collection of the Duke of Tuscany , thought to have had its head , arms and legs replaced and restored by the Renaissance master Michelangelo .
The original now exhibited in the Uffizi Museum, Florence , Italy .
Excellent colour and patina , raised on a square plinth base inscribed to the rear “Musee de Florence” .Depicted supported by a tree-trunk and wearing a modesty fig leaf , the head and face with crisp detail and having a body with well-defined musculature and conveying movement.
Versions of this iconic sculpture grace the great museums and collections of the world, including a large version cast by Massimiliano Soldani Benz (1648-1740) in the grounds of Blenheim Palace , Oxfordshire, England.
