Description

A Fine and Rare Late 18th Century George III Satinwood Octagonal Box, C.1790.

The kingwood crossbanded sectional top with ebony and box stringing is finely laid around a central inlaid patera. Opening on double hinges to the ebony lipped satinwood interior. The satinwood frieze is similarly crossbanded in in Kingwood to the top and base.

The box is in superb original conditon and has a lovely rich colour.

Satinwood boxes produced during the reign of George III, particularly between 1770 and 1800, reflected the Neoclassical taste popularized by designers such as Thomas Sheraton and George Hepplewhite. Imported from the West Indies, satinwood became highly favoured for small decorative items, tea caddies, and workboxes due to its luminous figure and warm tone.

These pieces were typically constructed with a solid timber carcass, such as pine or mahogany, covered in thin veneers of West Indian satinwood. Accent decoration often featured ebony and boxwood stringing, along with crossbanded borders of rosewood or tulipwood, secured with hand-cut brass hinges and steel lock mechanisms.

Authentic pieces exhibit hand-cut dovetail joints, slight irregularities in hand-planed interior surfaces, and natural shrinkage lines along veneer seams. Original hardware usually shows signs of hand-filing, and the underside often retains original patination or faint maker marks.
