Handsome Persian Village Rug, Circa 1890, 2.02m X 1.37m

19th century
Description

This is a very handsome Persian Village Rug. The combination of cotton warps and wool wefts are perplexing but point to the Bakhtiari tribe as the weavers. The fine weave, great wool quality and excellent dyes have been combined to create a striking rug, dominated by the two conjoined medallions in the field. However, I feel its the ivory border with rows of flowers which make the rug so appealing. This is an elegant rug with just the right balance of colours and design to fit in many decorative settings. Remarkably, it has survived in excellent condition with full even pile, and minimal signs of wear. The original ends are intact. The side cord on one side has been restored. Professionally cleaned.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Persian village rugs are hand-knotted floor coverings crafted in rural communities across Persia, known for their distinct geometric patterns, regional motifs, and durable construction compared to city workshop carpets.

These rugs are traditionally hand-woven using hand-spun sheep wool for the pile, knotted onto a foundation of wool or cotton warp and weft threads, and coloured using natural vegetable dyes.

Authentic pieces exhibit natural dye variation known as abrash, hand-bound selvedges, slight symmetry irregularities indicative of village looms, and natural surface wear consistent with age.

An antique Persian rug functions as a foundational element in contemporary living spaces, dining rooms, or hallways, contrasting effectively with clean-lined modern furniture or complementing classic interiors.

Regular gentle vacuuming without a suction beat bar, immediate spot cleaning with cold water, periodic rotation to balance foot traffic, and professional specialist cleaning preserve the natural wool fibres and dyes.
