Delftware is a form of tin-glazed earthenware produced in and around Delft in the Netherlands from the 16th century onwards. It is characterised by its distinctive opaque white glaze and cobalt blue hand-painted decoration, originally designed to imitate imported Chinese porcelain.

Traditional pieces were crafted from local clay, fired once, and then coated with an opaque white lead glaze containing tin oxide. Artisans hand-painted intricate designs directly onto the unfired glaze using cobalt oxide before a final high-temperature firing locked in the rich blue pigmentation.

Authentic period pieces feature earthenware bodies visible at unglazed foot rims, slight surface irregularities in the glaze, and tiny pinholes or flaking along the edges. Maker marks, factory initials, or painter monograms painted on the underside also assist in identification.

Blue and white ceramics serve as classic decorative accents that complement both traditional and modern schemes. Placing a symmetrical pair on a fireplace mantelpiece, console, or sideboard creates visual balance and introduces colour to neutral spaces.
