The figure of the Virgin is polychrome painted and parcel gilt, standing on a sphere, on a plinth base.
Originally it probably formed the upper part of a Maria Immaculata composition, featuring the Immaculate Conception of the Virgin, which was the most important iconographic type depicting the Virgin Mary in Rococo and Baroque art. The portrayal of the Virgin descending from Heaven to Earth, standing upon a crescent moon, surrounded by angels and with her hands extended or held together in front of her was a popular theme in painting and wooden sculpture in the 17th and 18th centuries.
