Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Staffordshire flatback figures are earthenware ceramic ornaments produced in England during the 19th century, designed with a flat rear surface to sit flush against a fireplace mantelpiece. They depicted popular cultural subjects, historical figures, folklore themes, and regional characters of the Victorian era.

These figures were cast in press moulds using earthenware clay, leaving a hollow interior to reduce weight and production costs. After firing, they received a lead glaze and were hand-painted with overglaze enamel colours and gilded details.

Authentic Victorian examples typically feature a flat, undecorated back with a small pressure-release vent hole, a hollow base, and signs of craquelure in the lead glaze. They rarely bear makers marks, as they were mass-produced folk pottery for working and middle-class households.

Display these figures on a fireplace mantelpiece, open bookshelf, or console table alongside natural wood finishes, framed botanical prints, and woven textiles. Grouping multiple figures of varying heights creates a curated, traditional focal point in modern country or eclectic spaces.

Dust the figure gently with a soft dry microfibre brush or cloth, avoiding harsh chemical cleaners or submersion in water which can damage overglaze enamels. Ensure the piece is kept away from direct moisture and extreme temperature fluctuations to protect delicate glazes.
