Whytock & Reid: A Carved Walnut Goliath* Library Armchair, Edinburgh

Muckle, comfortable and built to last until the next millenium...
Alongside Morison & Co. the firm of Whytock & Reid were the pre-eminent cabinet makers in Scotland in the early 20th century supplying excellent quality furniture to the professional and aristocratic classes throughout Scotland and beyond.
Inspired by 18th century library chairs, but interpretting the form rather than slavishly reproducing it, this chair has is made with a deep sprung seat and shorter leg, while retaining refinements such as the well-carved arm terminals and the chamerfering to the inside and bottom edge of the legs.
* W&R often made bespoke furniture, adapting their existing models to meet the requirements of their patrons. Some were given model names and these often related to the clients for whom they were commissioned. Tom Donaldson, a friend of mine, began working for the firm in the 1960''s and noted the similarities this model shares with the Wendover chair, although it''s wider and lower... slung. At the time of writing he couldn''t lay his hands on the W&R book, so I''ve taken the liberty of naming the chair Goliath on account of its proportions!
Height to the top of the seat 39cm
Well-presented original condition, and very solid indeed. One minor repair- small section of carving to the underfside of one terminal re-glued. The upholstery is recent and in good order.
Reliable transport throughout the UK can be easily arranged at cost price, please let me know if you would like a quote or have any other questions.
